Statement

Watching the slow movement of a flatbed scanner’s light, I decided to place my eye directly in front of it. I wanted to experience the mechanism differently – not from behind a lens but from within it – and I began to wonder what would happen if the eye became part of the scanning process.

The gesture felt playful, almost like testing the limits of a device, yet it also felt like vulnerability. The exposure caused discomfort, making seeing physical and immediate.

A scanner constructs an image line by line through a moving beam of light. By positioning my eye within this mechanism, I found myself both directing and subjected to the process. At times I remained still; at others, I moved in relation to the beam, allowing distortion and chance to influence the result. The resulting images resemble distorted self-portraits, yet the overall form appears unfamiliar.

This project continues my interest in perception and the construction of images. By shifting the position of the eye within the scanning mechanism, I examine how seeing is shaped through the interaction of body, light, and the scanner itself.
